Death Race
Death Race (2008)
Starring Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson
If action, adrenaline, and carnage are your flavor then this 2008 production should be at the top of your movie queue. Featuring rising action star Jason Statham and Ice Queen supreme Joan Allen this flick is a curiously brilliant mix of B-movie story line and A-movie production quality.
Statham, who has begrudgingly earned my respect as perhaps the best action star working today, portrays Jensen Ames a stereotypical hero falsely convicted of the murder of his wife. Recruited as a Death Racer in Warden Henessy’s (Joan Allen) highly popular and nationally televised no holds bar, heavily armored vehicle races, Statham bring his fast paced action style to a new arena.
Pitted against the likes of 14k, Gunner, Hector Grimm and 3 time champion Machine Gun Joe (masterfully portrayed by Tyrese Gibson), Ames dons the mask and identity of popular Death Race icon Frankenstein, who was murdered by Warden Henessy. The prize is simple: win 3 races and win your freedom. Aided by copilot and super hot diva Natalie Martinez, and a host of James Bond quality car gadgets Ames shoots, drives and smoke bombs his way through a maze of death traps while managing to kill his wife’s true murdered who is by shear luck also incarcerated at the same prison and racing in the same race.
Allen predictably delivers another Pam Landing quality performance, while Statham and Gibson interject a good blend of uber testosterone and on screen chemistry as rivals turned allies and Martinez is so hot it’s hard to look away from the screen. In all I give this film a 4 on the Puffster scale
